Emigrant Trail Ride – Frequently Asked Questions

  • Flat Tires are the most common issue for travelers of the trail. Please make sure your spare tire is good and you have the tools needed to access and change tires. Make sure to have any lug nut locking keys for changing your tires.

  • What radio will we be using for trail communications?
A major part of the Lassen Applegate Emigrant Trail Ride is to learn about the area from our trail guides. To do so, you need a GMRS radio capable of receiving on channels 15 – 22. If you don’t have a mobile GMRS radio, a handheld GMRS radio will do.
High Rock Trekkers should have enough radios for everyone, but we strongly urge you to obtain the license.

A starter, easy to use hand-held GMRS radio: Baofeng UV-5G+
An FCC license is required to transmit on any GMRS frequency. It only costs $35 for 10 years. You can obtain your license here: ULS Online Filing
There is no test, just a registration fee. The license is good for all members of a household. Not sure what to do, follow these steps: FCC.gov ULS Steps

  • Are there fuel stops along the trail?
No. There is fuel available at Mill City TA (5 minutes East of Imlay turnoff), or Lovelock, NV and at the end of the trail in Cedarville, CA. The trail is roughly 180 miles, traveled at slower speeds.

  • Where can I buy groceries?
Fernley, NV is the last decent sized town with lots of grocery store options. Minimal food is required on your part unless you have specific dietary restrictions. We do recommend you have some food, ‘just in case.’

The High Rock Trekkers provide the following meals:

    Saturday Lunch & Dinner
    Sunday Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
    Monday Breakfast

  • Where can I find water to refill my water jugs and water bottles?
There are no services between the start and end of the trail. Please bring enough supplies for the duration of the trip, especially water.

  • Can I bring my dog?
While you can bring your furry friend, it is highly recommend you leave them at home. Most of the area we travel has lots of Goat’s head weeds/thorns, which are extremely painful and makes for an unpleasant doggo experience.

  • Will my fullsize truck be able to do the trail?
A fullsize truck is not recommended. This is an offroad 4×4 trail, with lots of brush on the trails edge and on the trail. There are also multiple locations where a fullsize vehicle would have issue traversing the terrain.
